Key tools used by professional tilers

Anyone hiring tilers should get to know what tools they will use. Key tools used by professional tilers are not expensive, but should be purchased prior to the job. It helps to get to know the tools that tilers normally use for installation projects. Here’s a list that will familiarize you with the products.

Wall tile cutter

This is a special tool that tilers use to cut wall tiles. This tool will cut wall tiles which are not as thick as floor tiles. A wall cutter will allow you to get a smooth, straight cut on your wall tile. Wall cutters are usually available for about $20.

Tile nipper

This is a tool that looks like a pair of wire cutters, but it is very strong and can cut the edges off of ceramic tiles. This is a necessary tool as most tile needs to be trimmed a bit if tilers are going around corners or crevices. A good tile nipper with a carbide tip is around $15.

Adhesive spreader

This is a metal tool that looks like a spackle spreader and is used to put the adhesive on the floor so tilers can lay the tile flat. Most ceramic tile requires that he adhesive be applied to the floor, not the tile. The tile is then set on the floor and allowed to dry before grout is applied.

Floor tile cutter

This is a larger item that can make a straight cut for a floor tile. It usually runs about $40.

Spacers

These are placed between the tiles. They are usually made of plastic. The purpose of spacers is to make sure that tilers leave have the same amount of space between each tile so that they look even. Spacers are usually sold in packs for around $5.

Trowels

These are used to put on grout. Grout is applied all over the tile with the trowel then wiped clean so that it lies just in the spaces between the tile. Trowels and floats, which are also used to wipe down the tile, are available for about $10 each.

Hole cutter

If tilers plan to cut a hole into the tile for a wire or other reason, they will need a hole cutting system. This is a tool for professional tilers and runs about $50 for a kit.

Knee pads

Every tiler owns a set of these. As tilers are on your knees for an extended period they will want to get knee pads to cushion their joints. There are many different types of knee pads. Professional tilers use kneepads that are made especially for their trade which cost about $10 a pair.

Tools for professional tilers and do-it-yourself tilers are available at most home supply stores or online. In most cases, you can save money by purchasing a kit. A kit will have everything they need to lay either floor or wall tile and is a perfect way to get started. Installing tile is not difficult as long as you have the right tools and the right tilers.
