Painters and Decorators as Tradesmen

There is fluctuation in the number of painters and decorators employed in the industry, and it is often viewed as being closely linked to the economy. In general painters and decorators are employed in the construction industry or the home market. New homes need painters and decorators and paperhangers, and whilst there is growth in new home building then there are plenty of opportunities. In the domestic setting, a poor economy sees less people employing domestic tradesmen to work on their home with people doing the job themselves or not bothering doing decorating at all.

Painters and decorators are often viewed as being less skilled than others in the building industry, especially when compared with electricians and carpenters. There is though still a lot of skill in creating wall and structure coverings that are clean and attractive. Painters will often be told what colors are to be painted, stained or varnished onto a surface, but still requires the right substance to be used to create the right finish. Painters and decorators also have to prepare surfaces to ensure that paint is applied correctly, this could involve, stripping sanding, and filling in cracks. Painters may also be required to mix paints, and that in itself is a difficult task, as it is necessary to get a consistent color, that is why it is now more often an automated process done in paint shops.

Painting is made to look easy by professional domestic tradesmen and so many homeowners will be tempted to give it a go themselves. It is reasonably easy to do paint the centre of a large wall, but when you get to corners then the difficulty starts. Painters and decorators know how to cut in and ensure that paint is not applied to surfaces that it shouldn’t be. The choice of paint applicator is also vital for domestic tradesmen. There are a huge number of paint brushes, rollers and other applicators to choose from, all of which can be used to provide a different finish, or cover a larger area, the choice of applicator comes with the experience of good painters and decorators.

Paperhangers are less in demand than they once were, although anyone who has tried to hang paper at home, recognize that it is actually a difficult job to complete properly. There are a number of choices of wallpaper that paperhangers to choose from and they too need to prepare the wall surfaces. The amount of paste to use and concentration is also vital, and again comes with experience for the domestic tradesmen.

Good painters and decorators are a great asset to a building site and they are also vital to a well finished home. Many homeowners will do their own painting and paperhanging, although for a truly professional finish then professional domestic tradesmen should be employed. Whilst it is unfortunate that paperhangers are no longer in such demand, there is still a need for good painters and decorators, and the most skilled add value to any project.
