Are Electricians Magicians?

Electricity is a worrying subject for many home owners; it can be dangerous and scary, although this normally comes about as a lack of knowledge. As time has passed so more and more people are calling professional electricians in to deal with their electrical issues. For major jobs this is no bad thing but is it really necessary to call in a domestic electrician to change a fuse?

Professional electricians normally specialize in construction work, including electrical contractors, or maintenance work and domestic electricians. There are those professional electricians around who can do both types of work to a high standard.

Electrical contractors are normally found where major work is being done, either in the construction of a house, or in some major renovation work. Professional electricians who work in the construction environment will need more knowledge in general. Electrical contractors will be involved in the installation of wiring and fuses, which may need the ability to understand detailed building plans, or to come up with their own diagrams to ensure all wiring is safe. Electrical contractors will also need to be aware about the needs for national, state and local codes to be met and any permits that are needed.

Professional electricians also deal with optical cables, fire and security alarms and other forms of telecommunication work. The majority of their work though will deal with electrical cables and may extend into low voltage wiring systems, although there is normally a line drawn between the work of an electrical contractor and linesmen.

A domestic electrician will focus more on the maintenance work required to keep electrical systems working. This could involve the repair or replacement of wiring, fuses or any other broken electrical components. In a home setting this will also involve the installation of new circuit breakers to allow greater numbers of appliances to be used in our technology driven society. A domestic electrician is also likely to do regular tests of electrical equipment in a house or office to make sure that they are still safe to use.

Professional electricians will use a number of tools to make sure that they can do the job properly. It is not uncommon to see electrical contractors have a tool chest full of screwdrivers, pliers, knives, conduit benders, wire strippers and hacksaws. As it is possible that some construction work will be required to make room for circuits, switches or wiring then professional electricians will also use drills and saws. There is also a wide range of diagnostic tools used to test circuits and safety of installed components, including the use of ammeters, ohmmeters, oscilloscopes and voltmeters.

Electricity doesn’t have to be something to be afraid of but at the same time it is always better to hire professional electricians to do the majority of work found in the home. Electrical contractors and domestic electricians can install or fix any electrical items, and will do it safely and to code. Hiring reputable professional electricians is always the best way to go.
