Being a Kitchen fitter is more than just installing some cabinets

Kitchen fitters are the people who remodel or install your kitchen and make sure that everything works correctly and that everything fits together the way it should.  Kitchen fitters are responsible for dismantling the old kitchen (in the event of a remodel), doing the preparation work for the installation of a new kitchen, marking up the space, setting up units—including the fitting and leveling of these units, cutting the sinks and hobs, fixing the sink, fixing the taps and the jobs, cutting joints, fitting panels, fitting fillers, adjusting the doors—everything that makes your kitchen a kitchen—the kitchen fitter is the person who puts it all together.

People who are interested in fitting kitchens need to know about carpentry, plumbing and basic building.  They will need to know how to use a variety of tools from hand tools to power tools including the regular hammers, screwdrivers and wrenches to the levels, straight edges, brushes, and they will need to have a working knowledge of electrics when it comes time to install the electrical appliances.

Kitchen fitters need to be good at math, especially geometry and need to be able to read blueprints and diagrams.  They will need to be in good physical shape and have a fair amount of physical strength.  They also need to be able to work both independently and as part of a team.  Customer service skills are also a plus as kitchen fitters spend a good deal of time working with clients and what they want.  Kitchen fitters also work with plumbing, design and know how to properly install the cabinetry.

Kitchen fitters work with individuals to design and then install their kitchen.  This involves everything from deciding where the sink and plumbing should go to what the colors of the cabinets should be.  The home owners and the kitchen fitter work together to come up with a workable design and then the kitchen fitter will get to work.  They measure the area to make sure the design will work, find the materials to build the cabinets (or prep the ready made cabinets), and then build the cabinets, counters, lay the flooring and install everything.

The good news about becoming a kitchen fitter is that it isn’t something that you need any sort of special training or licensing for.  You can get on the job training or go into business for yourself; though getting some on the job training is the best idea.  If you have basic carpentry and plumbing skills, you should not have a problem getting hired as an entry level part of the team.

Kitchen fitting is more than just installing some cabinets or a new sink.  It involves working as part of a demolition and construction team (in the case of a remodel), lots of math and dealing with other people.  The work week is a fairly typical forty hour work week, though the better kitchen fitters will work overtime and on weekends to make sure that a job gets done correctly and on time.
